A NUANS® report is a complete comparison report of existing corporate names and trademarks. It is required to incorporate a named, not numbered, company. The report does not approve your name: it is the document the government examiner uses to decide. Names that are confusingly similar to an existing one, or that use prohibited words, are likely to be rejected.

A NUANS® report compares your proposed name against existing corporate names and trademarks across Canada. You need one to incorporate a named company; a numbered company does not require it. The report is submitted with your incorporation application and is what the examiner uses to assess your name.
Your proposed name is reserved for 90 days from the date of the report. If you have not filed your incorporation within that window, a new report is required.
No. A numbered company is assigned its number by the registry, so there is no name to search and no report to file, which is why numbered incorporations are usually the fastest route.
It follows the jurisdiction you are incorporating in: a federal incorporation needs a nationwide report, and a provincial incorporation needs one biased to that province. If you are not sure which applies, we choose the right scope for you when you order.
The examiner refuses the name and the incorporation does not proceed until you supply an acceptable one, which usually means a new search and another government filing fee. That is exactly why we read your report before you file and tell you if the name looks likely to be refused.
